Montreal Comic Con 2017 – Cosplay With Pets Panel

This past weekend I attended Montreal Comic Con to speak at a couple of panels. It was a fun but tiring weekend, and the Zoo sure is happy I’m back home.

I did a new panel while there called Cosplay With Your Pet. Overall it went well. Had a decent crowd considering it was a Friday afternoon at 2pm. Basically we spent 45min looking at pics of animals in cute costumes. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

I’m hoping to do it again at Ottawa Comic Con 2018. I have a number of things I want to improve, plus I plan to build costumes for animals I know so I can talk about the process etc. So be prepared for cute costume pics of the Zoo (Kara, Bela, & Tray #robacats) and my Squad (Emma and Lily B #robasquad  #wannaberobacat). I’ve also had a few different types of animals offer to be models/guinea pigs! It’s going to be a big year of miniature costuming!

Mission Pawsible – Beat the Heat Online Auction

Until July 16, 2017 Mission Pawsible is having an online auction! The proceeds of the auction go to help out two wonderful animal rescues in Ottawa, ON; The Ottawa Stray Cat Rescue and Furry Tales Rescue.

A word of why the rescues need help from the Mission Pawsible people;

‘Between the two rescues, there are over 200 cats in care with daily requests to take in more cats. The rescues cannot take in cats and help them find their forever homes without the funds to make sure the cats have been vet checked, vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchiped. Adoption fees do not cover associated medical costs so fundraisers like this one help to bridge the gap.

Please help us make this auction a successful one so that more cats can be saved and find their forever homes!’

The auction is not just for cat lovers! Many of the items were donated by restaurants, jewelry makers, services, and the list goes on.

Bearly Work Creations and I donated a suPURRvisor basket to the auction.

The suPURRvisor basket is a  wicker basket with a pillow and a wooden sign for the front that says suPURRvisior that a small to medium sized cat can fit in.

In the basket is a pillow, a hand hooked wool rug called Fat Cat from Bearly Work Creations  and a number of crocheted things by me; a placemat, a Santa Paws stocking, and a Jingle Jangle toy.

Fun Times at the Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides

Today was the day, and Team Emma was ready to hit the streets! It was a small crowd, but everyone had a great time.  Emma got to hang with the big boys. Two big huskies to be exact.

This was the first year for the event so we’re hoping word will spread and get more dogs involved next year.  This year over $1000 was raised for Dog Guides!

Due to Ottawa Race Weekend taking place we had to change the route for the walk, which ended up being a far more pleasant route. The last leg of our journey was along Beechwood Avenue where the race was taking place, so lot’s of cheering and music going on. So we decided to have a bit of fun with it. Even though this was a walk and not a race we cheered the dogs on as they made their way to the finish line. Due to her strategy of slow and steady wins the race (and some help from the husky parents) Emma was the first one to cross the finish line. Little stumpy legs beat the big boys! lol

Thanks to all Emma’s sponsors who helped her raise $131!

Thanks to Pet Valu Beechwood for putting on such a great event! Team Emma will be there again next year!

Help Animals In Need Simply By Walking

I just had a great app shared with me called ResQWalk,  and I’ll be giving it a full test run later.

The whole idea is that the app uses the GPS on your phone to track how much you walk and your favorite rescue gets some money.  When you first sign in you can choose which rescue to walk for. If you want to walk for more than one you simply have to reset it to the new one. Many local rescues are already signed up so it shouldn’t be to hard to find your favorite, and the app allows you to follow as many rescues as you want. Obviously I’ll be walking for the Ottawa Stray Cat Rescue, but I may from time to time walk for another.

You can download the app for either iOs or Android. It also helps you find local pet friendly areas such as parks, vets, lodging, etc. All in all a great resource for people with animal companions.

It’s that easy to help animal rescues get much needed funds. Every bit helps!

This week’s Animal Awareness Wednesday feature is on the Hungry and Homeless Cat Rescue!

(Formerly known as HHWCC – Hungry & Homeless in the World’s Coldest Capital)

HHCR is an animal rescue organization in Ottawa, Ontario. Their goal is to save injured or found cats and try to find them permanent suitable homes. When they find or hear of a cat or family living outside on their own, a member of HHCR finds them and evaluates their situation.

In almost all cases the animals are undernourished, hurt, diseased, parasitic, dirty and sometimes freezing to death. Medical help is arranged for any cat suffering from injuries or illness. The cats are taken to a Vet for evaluation and assistance as soon as possible.

All cats are at temporary foster homes until adopted. They rely on volunteers and donations from kind individuals who care. Fosterers and adoption homes are evaluated to ensure the best situation for the cat(s).

Helping pugs in need and finding them a “forever loving home” where they can rest their heads at night.

Under My Wing Pug Rescue is a registered charitable organization (822 842 290 RR0001) based in Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA & run entirely by volunteers who are dedicated to providing a bridge between a pug’s past life and its better future.

They provide pugs with medical care including; sterilization & vaccination, loving attention, comfort, companionship, as well as offering a loving forever home.

The rescue is run completely by volunteers who donate their time, effort, and skills for the love of pugs.

They don’t have a building, formal business hours or provide an animal shelter where people can drop by, choose a pug, and then take it home. Instead all the pugs are placed in loving foster homes until they find their forever homes.
